Why make the move now?
Our first internal prototype already brought movement, combat, magic, enemies, quests and the interface together in one playable build. The next stage of development will require far more environments, characters, animation and interconnected systems. The later a project changes its technical foundation, the more difficult and costly that transition becomes.
That is why, on 15 July, we began moving Malk from Unreal Engine 5.6.1 to Unreal Engine 5.8. This is not a restart and it does not change the concept we have established. We are transferring the existing project so that development can continue on a more current version of the engine.
What it can offer Malk
Malk is built around a semi-open world and a city that changes with the story. Familiar districts of Andalor must pass through summer, a rain-soaked autumn and the aftermath of the Night of Yorroh without losing their identity. That structure makes tools for building spaces, shaping terrain and vegetation, adjusting lighting and testing different environmental states especially valuable to us.
Unreal Engine 5.8 advances these areas alongside its character and animation toolsets. The value of the update is not the version number itself, but the opportunity to test ideas faster and spend less time working around limitations as the project grows.
Performance is another important part of Unreal Engine 5.8. Epic has improved PCG graph execution, reduced memory use in parts of Lumen and enabled dynamic resolution on PC for DirectX 12 and Vulkan. This does not mean that Malk will automatically run faster as soon as the migration is complete. The new version gives us a broader foundation for optimisation; the actual results will depend on profiling real game scenes, tuning content and evaluating each technology on our target hardware configurations.
Not a list of promises
We will not adopt a technology simply because it is new. Every tool must prove its compatibility, stability, performance and practical value for Malk. Some Unreal Engine features remain experimental and may never become part of the project.
The migration is still in progress. This update marks the beginning of that stage and its purpose: to preserve the concept we have established while giving it a stronger foundation for the years of development ahead.
An engine does not define the soul of a game, but it affects how confidently we can bring that game to life.
