The inhabitants of the Beyond Zone
The planned enemy roster reaches across demons, servants of the Cult of the Three-Eyed Skull, smugglers, the undead, ghosts and creatures native to the Beyond. Their origins and appearances may differ, but each still needs behaviour the player can recognise and learn.
Three early roles
The first tests use three different threats: a close-range fighter, an enemy using ranged magic, and a fast creature that rushes into contact before withdrawing. Together they reveal not only whether each attack works, but how those attacks interact in the same encounter.
Difficulty the player can read
We do not want difficulty to come from simply layering every attack at once. A dangerous opponent should be dangerous in an understandable way: through a heavy attack, awkward range, a defensive stance or an ability that must be accounted for. Elite enemies should add a mechanic rather than only a longer health bar.
Enemies may use their own tools intelligently. A creature capable of breaking a shield can choose to do so, but an ordinary enemy should not suddenly receive that power merely because the player has assembled a strong defensive build.
